Why You Should Be Kind to Yourself
If you read my last blog, then you know why you should be nice to others. But being nice to yourself is just as important, if not more so. Self-acceptance leads you to growth. Only when you are kind to yourself will you be able to grow and thrive.
But why is it sometimes more difficult to be kind to yourself? It is harder to forgive ourselves for mistakes and we often hold grudges against ourselves. One in five Americans suffer with mental health issues. Although simply being kind to yourself might not work magic but switching your mindset to one of more self-forgiveness will help with self-confidence and will help with mental health.
It’ll change the way other’s treat you. Showing more confidence will portray to others that you are secure and they can’t hurt you. The more secure you are then the less likely other people can have an impact on the way you feel. If there are any negative words directed towards you then they’ll have less of a bite.
Your health will also improve. If you’re kinder to yourself mentally then you’ll treat yourself better physically through your diet and exercise. Plus, with less stresses getting to you, the better and more easily you’ll sleep.
But how do you do it? There are lots of ways to be kinder to yourself. Some might seem a bit silly but it is important to do what is right for you and your mental health.
Put aside some time for yourself. Even if its just an hour or two once a week, save that time for yourself and treat yourself to a bath or some yummy snacks.
Write yourself a letter. Write down what you’re proud of yourself for and what you love about yourself. Every time you start to feel down read it and remind yourself of how awesome you are.
Invest in a therapist. Some times there’s just too much to handle and you need to seek the advice from a professional. There is a bit of a negative stigma around seeing a therapist but sometimes we all need some help and there is nothing embarrassing about that.
