Why You Should Work for a Startup

When I was looking for internships these past few years, I had it in my head that I needed to find one with a big company that future employers would recognize when they saw my resume. I was only applying to big corporations because I thought that it was the only way to get experience that would look good on paper.

In June, I met up with my friend, Lauren Pahl, for dinner and she was telling me about her job with The Backpocket and how much she loved working for them but that one of her coworkers had just left for another job. Later on I mentioned how I was having a difficult time getting an internship and Lauren had the idea to introduce me to her bosses to replace the guy who had just left.

It’s now three months later and I have learned so much while having a blast at work. Because it is a smaller company, there are less employees/interns, which means I am given bigger responsibilities and I feel like a more important part of the team. I am hands on with their social media, email marketing, blog writing, link creation, and event planning! I have also met so many amazing people and made some crazy memories.

Looking at it from the other side, it is also beneficial for companies to be hiring college students. College students might have less experience but we are moldable and more eager to learn. In Why It’s Worth It To Hire Students, an article by ZipRecruiter, they list off that students are more likely to have more enthusiasm to learn, students might be more tech savvy, students are more willing to take risks, students are moldable and can be trained easier, and that you know you’ll be giving a student a chance to gain needed experience. Some may say that hiring a cvollege student is a waste of money because they aren’t always thinking long term for employment, but if you provide a good job with a good environment, students will keep coming back.

Working for a start up provides so many cool experiences and some awesome opportunities for networking and learning. Plus, you’ll get to see the company grow and grow and you’ll be there with it the whole way.
